Both Iran, US ‘need to think they have lost’
Both sides need to believe they have “lost” if negotiations are to resume, says Martin Griffiths, former UN humanitarian chief and executive director of Mediation Group International.
“There’s a phrase, by the way, in the mediation community which may be relevant here: ‘A mutually hurting stalemate’. So you have a stalemate, which hurts both [parties] and stops both [parties] thinking that the pursuit of war is going to change their position,” Griffiths said.
Both the US and Iran are locked in a mutually hurting stalemate, said Griffiths, describing it as one of the few positive takeaways from the latest round of fighting.
He added that whichever parties engage in mediating an end to the conflict will need to demonstrate several qualities – and insisted that Qatar possessed those attributes.
“You need a knowledge of the principles, which is essentially neutrality, meeting all people, and looking for win-win and not imposing a solution … Also, the other one is leverage,” Griffiths added.
